Your private medical insurance checklist
There are certain things that have been echoed repeatedly throughout this site and as a result it should come as no surprise that they are important parts of the process for obtaining private medical insurance. So before you head out to get your hands on private medical insurance, there remain some important points that you should take into account. Of course, you should always remember to read up on the policy at hand to ensure that it covers everything you think that you will need and that you are aware that the cover will need to be renewed after each year. On a similar note there will be certain terms and conditions that you will need to adhere to – as well as the insurance provider – so make sure you read those as well.
Application:
So remember, when you are filling out your application you might need to provide the insurance with details of your medical history. You should ensure that you provide them with all of the relevant information that they need and, if you are unsure, to include it anyway. If the insurance company thinks that you have withheld information or lied then they may refuse to pay out when you make a claim or, worse, they could terminate the policy. This also applies to other personal information beyond your medical history.
Pre-Existing Conditions:
You are unlikely to be covered for pre-existing conditions and, depending on the policy, these will not be considered unless you have suffered from no symptoms of the condition two years into your cover. Likewise, be aware that if you change to a new insurance provider, conditions that originated after you took out the original cover may now be considered pre-existing conditions.
Premiums:
Remember that your premiums are likely to rise each year and to consider the options outlined in previous sections if you want to keep costs down. Likewise you must ensure that you keep up with payments and that you have chosen a policy that suits your budget.
But ultimately, you should ensure that you have found a policy that is right for you, that you have carried out enough relevant research and that you know the terms and conditions.
