What is Private Medical Insurance?
When we think of medical treatment in the United Kingdom we think of the NHS and this is because it is a publicly financed service that is available to all. But a drawback to having access to this service is the long waiting times caused by the enormity of demand and the lack of funding. Such waiting times have been a highly publicised over the years by the media around the world. As such people may find that they do not gain treatment for acute conditions as quickly as they might like.
This is where private medical treatment comes into play and with it Private Medical Insurance, which is designed to cover it. Private medical insurance is there to cover the cost of acute conditions – which are short term conditions, illnesses and injuries, and are curable – as long as the condition is covered by the specific policy at hand. There can be many benefits when patients opt for private medical treatment and this is why it can be a vital service that can run alongside the NHS in the United Kingdom.
When choosing a private medical insurance policy there are many factors that a patient will need to consider and it should be noted that there are a wide range of conditions that will rarely be covered by private medical insurance. These could include pre-existing conditions that a patient might have been suffering from prior to considering insurance, long term illnesses that are not normally treated by private medical practices and elective treatments such as cosmetic surgery (this is covered in more detail in a later section). Patients should also be aware that there are a wide range of different polices available and the details concerning specific conditions will vary from policy to policy.
However, should you find a policy that is right for you, private medical insurance will cover you in a wide range of situations and as a result you could gain access to the benefits of being a private patient. So you will usually have access to more luxurious surroundings including an en-suite room, television facilities and more – plus greater flexibility when it comes to choosing a time for your treatment.
So whilst the NHS is still there to cover a wide range of areas – from accident and emergency to long term illness – private medical insurance is there to complement the service and give patients greater choice.
